Southern Company celebrates National Engineers Week
<p>Engineers are a cornerstone of our business. Southern Company is proud to celebrate the many engineers across the system – especially during National Engineers Week, Feb. 18-24. The work our engineers carry out each day is vital to making life better for the customers and communities we’re privileged to serve.</p>
<p>National Engineers Week encourages public dialogue about the need for engineers and bringing practical applications to life for children, educators and parents. This year’s theme is <i>Engineers: Inspiring Wonder</i>. The event has been celebrated in the United States since its creation in 1951 to highlight the important contributions engineers have made to our society and promote the importance of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) among students.</p>
<p>As the energy industry continues to transform itself in a time of widespread technological innovation and changing customer expectations, we need to make sure the next generation of employees has the imagination and skills necessary to thrive in a world of new challenges and opportunities. STEM is essential for preparing America’s youth for that world.</p>
<p>Southern Company is committed to valuing and developing the next generation of employees that will join our workforce and help build the future of energy. Across our primary service area in the Southeast, we support STEM programs by engaging students and providing educators with resources to motivate them toward pursuing STEM-related careers. Southern Company system employees regularly visit classrooms to talk with students about their careers and serve as mentors. We host career expos, camps, technology demonstrations, robotics teams and competitions. We partner with schools to develop curriculums and award teachers who develop creative and effective approaches.</p>
<p>Since the 1920s Southern Company has offered a Cooperative Education Program (co-op) to provide valuable experience outside the classroom. These programs give hands-on experience to undergraduates in the areas of engineering, business, finance and computer science. More than 5,000 promising students have completed our co-op program.</p>
<p>Science, technology, engineering and math have been fundamental to the energy industry’s ability to make lives better through advances that we often take for granted. Today, STEM is leading the use of robotics, unmanned aerial systems and other amazing new technologies that are ushering in the future of energy.</p>
