Southern Company was recognized Thursday night as the winner of the Energy Transition Award for Power at the 2024 Platts Global Energy Awards in New York.
The honor is bestowed annually to the power producer, utility, system operator or regional market entity who best demonstrates excellence in generation and grid asset management, system operations, technological innovation, including the use of AI and grid modernization and cybersecurity. The acknowledgement centered around the completion of Plant Vogtle, which became the largest generator of clean energy in the United States following Unit 4 entering commercial operation in April.
“This would not be possible without the work of the more than 30,000 men and women who helped build this plant,” said Chairman, President and CEO of Southern Nuclear Pete Sena. “Constructing the first nuclear units built in the U.S. in more than 30 years proves we can do hard things.”
Units 3 (which entered commercial operation in July 2023) and 4 are the first newly constructed nuclear units in the U.S. in more than three decades and can each power an estimated 500,000 homes and businesses. The two new units represent a long-term investment in the state’s clean energy future and will provide reliable, emissions-free energy to customers for the next 60 to 80 years. The Plant Vogtle site is expected to produce 30 million megawatt hours of electricity each year from the four units combined, supporting continued growth in Georgia as more industries, businesses and families come to the state.
Southern Company was also named a finalist for the 2024 Infrastructure Project of the Year for the Plant Vogtle construction completion. The category recognized project execution and management as well as transportation and midstream operations and strategy. Finalists were lauded for demonstrating their capacity to deliver an infrastructure project or effect a notable energy transition strategy in any part of the energy infrastructure arena, including power transmission, EV charging, pipelines, storage and distribution of fuels, biofuels, chemicals or other energy or downstream products.
