Southern Company coal combustion residuals compliance program
<p>Southern Company is committed to providing clean, safe, reliable and affordable energy for the customers we serve. The Southern Company system operates a rigorous Coal Combustion Residuals (CCR) compliance program that complies with all applicable laws and regulations to safely, effectively and responsibly manage CCR.</p>
<p>Southern Company made a commitment to close all ash ponds years ago, well before it became a hot topic. We did so because of our pledge to look after the customer first, so they can be sure their community is better off because we are there. We continue to be proactive in our approach to ash ponds because we take our obligation to safety and environmental stewardship extremely seriously.</p>
<p>Across the system, Southern Company is moving aggressively to divert ash and wastewater from ash ponds, including the construction of dry ash handling equipment, wastewater treatment systems, and applying advanced engineering features for those ponds which will be closed in place in Georgia. We currently are closing inactive ponds, have put a schedule in place for all ponds in the system to stop receiving ash by 2019 and, thereafter, will close every remaining ash pond in our system. Additionally, Southern Company currently avoids CCR disposal by beneficially using 60% of produced ash and gypsum.</p>
<p>As part of our rigorous CCR compliance program, Southern Company operating companies have established groundwater monitoring systems around CCR units that meet EPA’s monitoring requirements.</p>
<p>All Southern Company electric operating companies are complying with CCR rule public data posting requirements. The data are published on each of our operating company’s respective web sites.</p>
