Plant Hatch

The Edwin I. Hatch Nuclear Plant, located near Baxley in southeastern Georgia, is jointly owned by Georgia Power (50.1%), Oglethorpe Power Corporation (30%), Municipal Electrical Authority of Georgia (17.7%) and the City of Dalton (2.2%).

The plant was named for Edwin I. Hatch, president of Georgia Power from 1963 to 1975. He served as chairman of the company from 1975 until his retirement in 1978.

Plant Hatch is one of Georgia Power's two nuclear facilities and is one of three nuclear facilities in the Southern electric system.

Construction of the plant began in 1968. Unit 1 began commercial operation in December 1975. Unit 2 began commercial operation in September 1979. The total cost of the plant was $934 million.

Units 1 and 2 are rated at 924 megawatts (MWe) each. The plant is powered by boiling water reactors supplied by General Electric Company.

News about the plant

  • Plant Hatch is certified as a wildlife habitat by the Wildlife Habitat Council. It has been a certified wildlife habitat since 1994.
  • Plant Hatch set a new plant record for net generation in 2000 with 13,308,066 mwh. This is the fifth year in a row that Plant Hatch generated more than 12 million mwh.
  • In 2000 Plant Hatch set a new plant record for capacity factor during a two-outage year of 84.53%. Capacity factor is a measurement of how much electricity is generated compared with the amount of electricity a plant is capable of producing.
  • In 2000 Unit 1 set a new plant record for the shortest refueling outage with 34.6 days.
