Cleaner Coal
It's efficient. It's abundant. At Southern Company we're pioneering clean ways to use coal.
Emissions ControlThrough 2008, invested about $6.3 billion in environmental controls. Planning to spend additional $3.1 billion through 2010 to further reduce emissions of nitrogen oxide, sulfur dioxide and mercury.
A diverse portfolio of solutions will be necessary to reduce carbon dioxide emissions from power generation. We are pursuing a number of carbon dioxide reduction strategies including increasing energy efficiency and conservation, bringing more renewables online, and deploying new nuclear and clean coal technologies.
Capturing Carbon DioxideClean coal, including carbon capture and storage, increasingly appears to show promise for the future although barriers to commercial-scale operation, such as the affordability of carbon capture technology and long-term storage liability issues have yet to be fully resolved.
