Southern Company’s investment in renewable energy continues to grow with the addition of a 100-megawattt biomass facility in Nacogdoches County, Texas. The facility – the largest of its kind in the U.S. – is scheduled to begin commercial operation in June 2012.
The Southeast isn’t just where we work; it’s where we live. And we have a keen interest in seeing that good things happen here. That’s why we have hundreds of engineers, researchers and other experts who are constantly looking for ways to generate electricity more cleanly than ever before. We operate the U.S. Department of Energy’s primary research center for reducing carbon from power plants, and the nation’s only research center dedicated to limiting mercury emissions. We’re hard at work designing and building a new research center in north Georgia to find better ways to manage and protect water. We’re advancing energy independence through proprietary technologies that could not only help preserve coal as a fuel resource but also assist in the recovery of American oil reserves. We’re increasing our use of renewable energy such as solar, wind and biomass. And Georgia Power is building more advanced nuclear reactors that use gravity to release additional cooling water from overhead storage tanks in the event of an accident, reducing the need for human or mechanical intervention.
