Nacogdoches Generating Facility
The Nacogdoches Generating Facility, one of the largest wood biomass power plants in the United States, began commercial operation June 2012. The 100-megawatt biomass fueled base-load facility provides enough power to supply approximately 60,000 homes with electricity. The plant is owned and operated by Southern Power, a subsidiary of Southern Company. Southern Power is a wholesale energy provider and focuses on helping its customers meet their energy needs in a cost-effective, reliable and environmentally responsible manner.
Located near Sacul in Nacogdoches County, Texas, the plant is being built to serve a 20 year contract with Austin Energy to help meet the state's Renewable Portfolio Standard, with the output serving the City of Austin.
Southern Company continues to develop and deploy smarter and cleaner energy technologies, including increased energy efficiency, nuclear power, clean coal and renewables. Nacogdoches represents another step in developing a diverse portfolio to meet the nation's growing energy demands.
